Grade 3

A Time of Discovery and Transformation

At around age nine, children begin to think in a more independent and critical way. They sense that they will make their own way in the world one day, and are eager to learn about the practicalities of daily life.

Third graders grow vegetables, build shelters, and learn about time, measurements, and money. They work with their hands outside the classroom and explore the fundamentals of grammar and mathematics inside the classroom. Reading is practiced, writing is strengthened, and children learn to sing separate parts in rounds.

Stories of the Hebrew People

Students explore stories of the ancient Hebrew people through the time of Moses. These are stories of people seeking a home on Earth and building community, themes that resonate in particular with children of this age. Exploration of world religions are taken up in later grades, including Islam and Buddhism in fifth grade.

Precision in Handwork

Children work with raw materials, such as silk, wool, and flax fiber. Third graders learn to crochet in the round using organic yet mathematical sequencing patterns. They create their own multi-colored wool hats and other rounded pieces such as market bags or hacky sacks.
