Through our understanding of child development, we see sixth grade
as the appropriate age for children to begin to have the opportunity
to learn to work together as teammates, experiencing the joys and
disappointments inherent in team sports in a cooperative spirit.
The school provides this sports opportunity with the understanding
that everyone involved will strive for an atmosphere of healthy,
friendly competition. Team members learn the importance of appropriate
behavior and sportsmanship, both at practices and at games.
SFWS follows the required guidelines of the league in which we
are playing. In general, each student plays a portion of each game,
but the amount of time is determined by the coach and by league
rules. Parents are informed that it is inappropriate to discuss
playing time or any other matter with the coach during a game. Our
teams are open to all levels of ability and all students are encouraged
to try the experience of team sports. Winning at this age is secondary
to the goal of giving everyone a chance to play.
Some coaches may elect to allow a parent or other volunteer adult
to assist them with practices and team organization. It again becomes
part of parent education to help the volunteers, and indeed all
the parents, to understand how important it is not to interfere
with the authority of the coach.
The San Francisco Waldorf School sports program includes league
play for both basketball and volleyball in grades 6 – 8. Both
girls and boys basketball are offered in the winter season. Sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade boys each have a team that competes in
the CYO league, a city-wide league with teams from both private
and parochial schools. Each class team has their own coach and is
placed in the league standings based on their records.
Over the years our teams have won several titles including two
Division Championships, three Division Runners Up, and two Division
Second Places.
