Administrative Director Search

February 15, 2017 New update

We are pleased to announce, after a thorough national search, that Craig Appel will be joining the San Francisco Waldorf School as our new Administrative Director on March 20th.

Craig is passionate about the San Francisco Waldorf School. He brings a long history of involvement as a parent and board member. During his tenure as Board President, he was instrumental in refining our school's unique system of shared governance. Craig holds a Masters' degree in nonprofit administration, led strategic planning and donor cultivation efforts for The Energy Foundation, and most recently served as the Executive Director of Hand in Hand Parenting.

As Administrative Director, Craig will implement the policies set by the Board of Trustees and provide support to the College of Teachers when administrative and pedagogical issues overlap. He will serve as our school's senior spokesperson, manage community affairs, and direct our administrative and business operations.

To initiate the search for our new Administrative Director, the Board of Trustees formed a joint Faculty-Staff-Board search committee and engaged Carney, Sandoe & Associates, a specialist in the field of leadership placement in independent schools. The firm produced a prospectus based on community input and conducted a national search. Three finalists visited our community in January to meet with parents, faculty, and staff. The final selection of Craig Appel was made unanimously by the Board of Trustees on February 13, 2017.

We are excited to have Craig Appel join our exceptional school community as we continue to expand our mission and vision for future growth. We are also grateful to the entire school community for your thoughtful and engaged participation in the search process.

Skip Kotkins from Carney&Sandoe has sent profiles of quite a few qualified candidates to the search committee. The committee met recently to review these profiles and has now selected a group to be interviewed in early December. After these interviews the committee will select finalists and schedule dates for personal visits to meet with faculty, staff and parents at our school. Stay tuned for more updates.

Dear members of the San Francisco Waldorf School Community,

We want to extend our tremendous appreciation to everyone who took the time to fill out our survey and/or meet with our Search Consultant on Monday or Tuesday of this week. Skip Kotkins from Carney, Sandoe & Associates told us that he was tremendously appreciative of the warm welcome he received and the openness and passion for the school he witnessed from everyone he met.

More importantly, he reported to the Search Committee that we are a “happy school” and share a common appreciation for what we have and vision for the future. This pride in our school, the many strengths we enjoy, and our clarity of vision for the future will be important and attractive factors in attracting a great pool of candidates for our Administrative Director position.

The next steps in our search will be the creation of a formal Position Description used to publicize the position and that should be completed by the end of the month. Our hope is to spend the rest of the Fall recruiting and vetting candidates with the intent of bringing finalists to visit campus shortly after the New Year. At that time, we hope you will again participate by meeting the candidates and sharing your impressions with the Search Committee. Based on input from you, thorough reference and background checking and other information, the Search Committee will recommend a candidate to the Board for approval.

Again, thanks very much for sharing your insights with our consultant. This input is critical in the Search Committee’s determination to make sure we find a candidate who meets the needs of the broadest possible cross section of our school.

Kind regards,

Sheila Schroeder, President, Board of Trustees
Jim Stearns, Trustee, Chair of Administrative Director Search Committee
