Founders' Night Showcase 2012

Friday, May 11, 2012, 5:00-9:00pm
SFWHS, 470 West Portal Avenue
Students, faculty, parents and friends are invited
to the seventeenth annual Founders’ Night Showcase
You will be treated to an open house style exhibition of academic work in the sciences, mathematics, languages, and humanities, as well as a fine gallery of work from our many art classes. Music performances will be offered by all of the high school performing groups: Concert Choir, Orchestra, Drum Ensemble, Jazz Band, and the Acoustic Guitar groups.
Timed tickets will be issued as you arrive to guide you through the evening. There will be three 45-minute musical sets in our performance venues - Eurythmy Hall and Herbst Hall - beginning at 5:30pm, 6:45pm, and 8pm. Light refreshments on our garden patio throughout the evening. Come experience and celebrate the high school!
We will have parking attendants in our lot but there is limited parking available. Please find street parking, carpool or take public transportation if you can. Contact Jessica Eicher with questions.

REMINDERS for Friday, May 11:
Bring concert dress to school
Concert dress is black & black clothing: black shoes (no sneakers), black pants/skirt/dress (not jeans), black shirt (not a sweatshirt). Colorful accents allowed. Ties and jackets are not required.
Don't forget your instruments!

Founders' Night Follow-up & Student Service Day: Monday, May 14
Students who need service should sign up to come help to put the school back together after Founders' Night on Monday, May 14 at 10am. There will be tables to move, chairs to set-up, classrooms to arrange and artwork to haul. Seniors who need hours to receive their diplomas: please take advantage of this opportunity for service hours. Sign up with Jessica Eicher.

LGBT Adult Get-together
Parents Silvia Castellanos, Jim Emery and Charlie Spiegel (all 9th grade) and Mary Wallace (6th grade) are hosting an informal no-agenda adults only Potluck dinner for LGBT affinity at The SF Waldorf School on the night of Saturday May 19, 7:30pm. We will be eating at Jim's home at 780 Dolores St., cross at 21st St., J train or BART to 24th St.

Seeking Host Family
Seeking a host family for an incoming high school exchange student, Natsuki Futatsugi who will study at SFWHS from August 20 to October 20, 2012. She will be coming from the Hokkaido Steiner High School in Japan, where one of our students, Sophie Kawada, will study this summer. Natsuki will enter the 11th grade. The host family does not need to speak Japanese, although any help in this area is appreciated. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

SFWHS Literary Reading with Music & Songs at The Booksmith
Friday, May 18th
Come and celebrate the upcoming release of Full Stop., SF Waldorf High School's biannual literary magazine (summer issue), at The Booksmith book store on Friday, May 18th at 6:00 pm! This evening of poetry, prose, and music is presented by the SFWHS Literary Magazine Club. Student writers include Noam Baruch, Caroline Kaufman, William Donovan-Seid, Jessie Ferguson, Annie Hughes-White, Reilly Hurley, Alex Jordan, Damon Mayfield, Davia Schendel, Eric Settels, Zack Llull, Cole Young and Ishmael Watkins. Readings will be accompanied by Owen Christofferson ( bass), Ida Fox (ukulele, voice) and Caroline Kaufman (voice). Alumna Zoe Brezsny (SFWHS '09) will join the current students reading her own poetry.

Solar Eclipse, Sunday, May 20 in Redding & School Attendance
The Urban Astronomer (Paul Salazar, grade 8 & 12 parent) and SFWHS physics teacher Dr. Carini want everyone to be aware of a rare and exciting eclipse coming up in the afternoon of Sunday, May 20th. Dr Carini and Ms Alba will be attending the Solar Eclipse in Redding, CA and therefore there will be no main lesson on Monday for 11th grade. Classes for 11th grade will begin at 10:15 on Monday, May 21.
We encourage all students to attend the solar eclipse. If your student is planning to attend and will therefore miss part or all of the school day on Monday, May 21, you must let us know in advance and ask your student to complete an Excused Absence form. Please email Heather at the front desk right away. As we announced in all-school meeting, all students are encouraged to find Dr Carini in Redding, or take a photograph of themselves there, so that we can verify and honor the excused absence for this fine scientific observational opportunity.

The seniors have been told many stories in their time with us, and now it's time for them to tell us one! Come join us as Scheherazade weaves one unforgettable story after the next, and in doing so not only saves her life, but the life of the King. The Arabian Nights is a famous tale, originating from and traveling to many different countries. With original music, beautiful costumes, and all of the senior class on stage, it promises to be a wonderful event.

Our 8th Grade basketball teams have a play-off games this Saturday, May 12. They will be playing a team that has a full cheer leading squad (with uniforms) and many supporters**. Please come hoot and holler for our grade school girls this weekend if you are able!

Summer Interns at San Francisco Botanical Garden Children's Garden
Work with 5- to 10-year-old children planting seeds, pulling weeds, picking strawberries, catching bugs, doing crafts, playing games and more.
