Dear Parents and Friends of SFWS,
I am pleased to announce that the San Francisco Waldorf School Board of Trustees, in collaboration with the College of Teachers, has appointed Dr. Caleb Buckley as Administrative Director. For the past 10 years, Caleb has served as the Director of the Yuba River Charter School, a Waldorf-inspired school in Nevada City, CA. Dr. Buckley also co-founded, and was a history teacher at the Austin Waldorf High School in Austin, TX, where he served as a member of the College of Teachers and Board of Trustees. He received his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of California at Davis and a Bachelor and Masters Degree from San Francisco State. He is also a graduate of the Marin Waldorf School. Caleb, and his wife Genevieve, have three children ages 14, 10, and 1.
Caleb will start full-time in the role of Administrative Director on July 1, 2014. In the interim, while finishing the school year in Nevada City, he will participate in various SFWS retreats and meetings, review materials, planning documents and budgets, and meet as many students and parents as possible to begin his transition into our community.
The appointment of Caleb to the role of Administrative Director is a notable milestone in the biography of our school. Beginning last spring, the faculty, staff, college, and board—with input from many of you—have focused attention on the authority, responsibility, and decision-making scope of many of the roles and committees at our school. Part of this process was refining the job description (and title!) of the Administrative Director. In this role, Dr. Buckley will lead the business side of our school, focusing on marketing, enrollment, advancement, community engagement and the day-to-day operations of our school. He will work in collaboration with High School and Grade School Chairs (Jessica Eicher and Karen Nelson) who remain, after the class or subject teacher, the point of contact for parent comments and concerns. Appointing a candidate from outside our own community to this new role is an indicator of progress in our effort to improve and clarify governance at our school.
The board conducted a thorough search for the Administrative Director, which included multiple visits and meetings with many faculty, staff, college and board members, and deep examination of references and history. The board felt comfortable taking a long time to find a candidate, given that our school is currently on solid financial footing, with a well-functioning Administrative Council and a highly qualified, committed, and professional cadre of teachers and staff.
I am appreciative of the passion and dedication of the parents and teachers of our school community in providing a deeply supportive, creative, and rigorous Waldorf education for our children. We are thrilled to have found a well-qualified, experienced and dedicated Administrative Director in Caleb Buckley. We hope you will share in our excitement and welcome Caleb and his family to our community.
If you have questions about our new Administrative Director or our school governance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Warm wishes for a happy 2014,
Board of Trustees
