On Saturday, June 11, at 11am, the Class of 2011 held their commencement exercises at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center around the corner from our high school campus.
Thirty-six of the thirty-eight graduating seniors (seniors Logan Hart and Cairo Stewart were in Tennessee participating in the US National Youth Rowing Championship) proceeded to the stage accompanied by the SFWHS orchestra. SFWS Head of Administration Dan Ingoglia welcomed the audience to the Masonic Center – the first time the school has used this neighborhood site – and noted that the Class of 2011 is the first class to experience all four years at our new high school campus at 470 West Portal. Commencement speaker Orland Bishop, co-founder and Executive Director of ShadeTree Multicultural Foundation, inspired the graduates telling them that they were ready to embark on the next stage of their journey and reminding them of the power of love and truly seeing other human beings as they strive to bring their own gifts and “light” to the world.
Music, poetry, words of gratitude and beautiful retrospectives on their time at SFWS were offered by seniors Liesl Bellach, Alexander Casey, Wayne Fisher-Burton, Maaéah Howell, Kirin Jain, Yorke Li, Charlotte Markle, Ella Savareid, Peter Schwarzenbach, Isabella Serrano, Tabeetha Sun, and Jasmine Vardigans. Humanities teacher and class sponsor Joan Caldarera, who had just returned with the class from their trip to Mexico, brought an overview of lively group who cared deeply about relationships and community, but maintained a remarkable sense of their individuality and diversity throughout their time at the high school.
Ms. Caldarera and co-sponsors Mauricia Prado and Heidi Hillman presented the diplomas along with Mr. Ingoglia and outgoing President of the Board of Trustees, Michael Gowe. The ceremony ended with the class singing Dona Nobis Pacem led by faculty member David Weber.
Congratulations to the Class of 2011!
