Executive Director Search

In October 2024, San Francisco Waldorf School Administrative Director Craig Appel announced he will step down from his position at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Craig has led the school through an unprecedented time of change over the past seven years. This coming year, he along with the Board will focus on the institution’s continued growth as well as a smooth introduction for the next professional in the new role of Executive Director.

Incoming Executive Director

Message from Lauren Smith

Dear San Francisco Waldorf Community,

I am thrilled to greet you as the new Executive Director of San Francisco Waldorf! I am grateful to the Search Committee for their thorough process which included introductions to so many at the School. Through the process, I have begun to know SF Waldorf more closely. I am honored to join founders, current leaders, and the faculty, staff and community members in between, who have built an enduring and dynamic school. During my visit, the creativity of the faculty inspiring the students was evident. I saw students who were relaxed yet energetically engaged. At all age levels, it was clear that caring, trusting relationships were at the heart of the culture of the School. This is a beautiful expression of Waldorf education that I will be proud to represent.

Through my years in Waldorf education, I have seen that our attention to nurturing healthy relationships is foundational to our work. The teacher - student/class relationship is critical to creating a powerful learning environment. The relationships of students with each other allow for growth and resilience. Likewise, the relationships of school leaders, staff, faculty, community members and alumni, stimulate growth and bring joyful meaning to our lives. I look forward to collaborating with all of you as we build toward the 50th anniversary of the School. The relevance of our approach, at this time in our culture, provides an opportunity to expand the relationship of SF Waldorf to the San Francisco community. I am so excited and grateful to take up this work!

Personally, my connection to California is a long one established through family ties and many vacations. I first got to know San Francisco years ago as a business traveler. Now, I look forward to reconnecting to all my favorite places and discovering new ones as a resident. My first visitor will be my daughter, Chloe, who is a graduate of the Waldorf School of Lexington, the Waldorf High School of Massachusetts Bay, and New York University.

Leading up to my arrival, I look forward to additional visits to San Francisco in the coming months, and seeing many of you at the school. I am eager to hear your thoughts and aspirations. Your insights will be invaluable as we build upon the school's already strong foundation. For now, I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome I have received from every person I have met.

Warm regards,

Lauren Smith

The Search Process

To assist in our search, we have retained Educators Collaborative (EC), a firm specialized in finding senior leaders for independent schools.

Tracy Bennett from EC is leading the process and is well-versed in Waldorf education as a former head of Seattle Waldorf School (2011-2020). She has also worked closely with many peer schools, including Highland Hall, Shining Mountain, Denver, Honolulu, and Steiner School in NYC. Tracy has already begun the search process and, along with an SF Waldorf School Search Committee, will ensure that we identify candidates with the skills and experience necessary to lead our diverse community, uphold our Waldorf pedagogy and values, and continue to deliver on our promise of educational excellence.
