We value innovative thinking, regenerative design and working collaboratively to create healthy, thriving and beautiful environments. Our approach is collaborative and hands-on, balancing conceptual innovation with thoughtful craftsmanship to shape soulful spaces and structures.

Our projects include custom design and high-performance residences, schools that inspire learning, diversity and inclusion and, building upgrades that transform the work-life experience.
We are as passionate about working closely with our residential and educational clients as we are about working on larger projects involving multi-stakeholders like Francisco Park and Noe Valley Town Square.

Our 24-year relationship with the San Francisco Waldorf School includes design for the
preschool at Baker and Sacramento Streets, search for a unified campus, renovation of the
High School and San Francisco’s first LEED Gold certified school. Our most recent work, The
David Bushnell Center for Athletics and Community was named in honor of 450 Architects’ Co-
Founder David Bushnell, who along with his family are beloved members of the SF Waldorf

With David’s passing, his partner Richard Parker completed the project and is embracing the Waldorf community and pedagogy, as his own children enter the Waldorf School.

Your project is all about you. We start your process with a project questionnaire that we customize for each client. This begins a dialogue in which we help you understand what you really want and need - and get truly prepared for the complexities of an architectural and construction project. Only once we help you explore and prioritize your needs around function, aesthetics, and budget do we start sketching to create your dream house, whether it's a new home or an addition.

We are a dynamic, socially and environmentally responsible boutique residential firm with expertise in Ecological Design, housing of all sorts, and Universal Design/Aging In Place. We do projects throughout the Bay Area.

Whether we’re working in an historical style or composing something entirely new, we combine a strong, sculptural architectural vocabulary with the grace of nature: richness with serenity. We appreciate the intrinsic beauty of natural materials, and carefully orchestrate how they come together.

Our working style is clear, collaborative, and practical. We employ advanced computer modeling to investigate design possibilities. Our construction drawings are thoroughly detailed, providing effective cost control during construction.

Begun by Erick Mikiten and Elisa Mikiten in 1991, Mikiten Architecture’s founding goals were to create dramatic, creative buildings, pioneer new levels of Universal Design and Sustainable Design in every project we undertake, and to manage each one smartly so that our clients’ goals are met and their hopes of what their project could accomplish are exceeded.

Community Discount: Discount of 5% off standard hourly rates for Waldorf community (Mention SFWS Professional Directory). 10% off our Design Diagnosis process (see web site).
