Field Trips

San Francisco Waldorf School takes advantage of the Bay Area’s rich cultural resources for school-day excursions—museums, theater, musical performances—and is particularly known for its outdoor education field trips.

Nature outings begin in the early years with walking, gardening, and exploration of the Presidio. In third grade the children reach an exciting milestone, taking the many overnight class field trips, this time to a working biodynamic farm in Mendocino County. The class rises early to tend the animals, harvest food, and prepare meals. For third graders studying agriculture, farming, and practical skills, there’s nothing better than a week on the farm.

Older students are challenged on trips to California’s wilderness areas. There are expeditions to Yosemite to study geology or Big Sur to explore botany. Days are filled with kayaking, ropes courses, or rock climbing, and nights are spent under the stars. Over the years our students become adept campers and skilled naturalist while learning about cooperation, personal responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
