Festivals & Events

Festivals and celebrations are part of life at San Francisco Waldorf School. These events mark the seasons, holidays, and cultural traditions, and build community.


Rose Ceremony: School begins with an assembly that includes a preview of the year by each Class Teacher. The eighth grade class welcomes the first graders into the grade school with a rose for each child.

Stern Grove Festival: A schoolwide celebration of fall at Stern Grove, this outdoor assembly includes class presentations, games, and food. Parents are welcome.

Sukkot: Third graders often celebrate the autumn harvest by building a festive hut in the garden. Complements the curricular studies.

Fairy Walk (Halloween-time): Young children encounter wandering faries, gnomes, kings, queens, and characters from the land of imagination! This weekend celebration for the family is sponsored by the Parent Guild.

Dia de los Muertos: For this special remembrance of our ancestors, an assembly is hosted by the Spanish Department and the Festival Committee.

Thanksgiving Assembly: This marks a time to give thanks and share class performances. as our annual food drive ends. Family and friends are welcome to this special event sponsored by the Festival Committee.


Winter Fair: This schoolwide celebration of the season with games, performances, and a marketplace is a weekend community event is sponsored by the Advancement team, with parent support.

Garden of Light: Students walk a candlelit winter spiral in honor of the season of light. This quiet celebration is offered to the young children at our school.

Santa Lucia: Second graders often commemorate the Winter Solstice with this special festival of light and song. Complements the curricular studies.

Shepherds Play: Presented in the folk tradition, faculty present the Shepherd’s Play to the school community during the day and a performance open to the public at night.

Martin Luther King Day: Assembly honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and nonviolent activism. Authors and Civil Rights leaders have spoken to the students.

Lunar New Year: A celebration of the lunar New Year with stories, crafts, dumplings and performance. Sponsored by Mandarin Department and Festival Committee.

Middle School Music Showcase: Student encouraged to perform solo or small ensemble work from the music practice.


Grandparents and Special Friends Day: We welcome grandparents and special friends for a special day. Guests visit classrooms, view student work, and attend an assembly with class performances. Sponsored by Advancement Office and Festival Committee.

Spring Night (parents-only): A benefit for the school! Parents enjoy food, friends, music, and a live and silent auction with contributions from the community and friends. Sponsored by the Advancement Office.

Spring Concert: Class orchestras present their work to the community at an evening concert. Sponsored by the Music Department.

May Faire: A weekend celebration of Spring for the whole family. Dancing round the maypole, outdoor games, marionette show.

End-of School Assembly: The school year concludes with a final assembly including the return gift of a rose from the first grader students to their eighth grade buddies.

These events are supported through a variety of entities in the school such as the Parent Guild, Advancement Office, and the faculty Festival Committee. The Festival Committee welcomes ideas and initiatives from the community for multicultural events and festivals. Contact: mleitz@sfwaldorf.org
